Galvanized pipe was common in homes built before the 1960s, but today most inspectors and plumbers recommend replacing it. Here’s why:
1. Corrosion and Rust
Galvanized steel is coated with zinc, but over time the coating wears off. This exposes the steel, which rusts from the inside out.Rust flakes can break off into your water supply. 2. Restricted Water Flow
As corrosion builds up inside, the diameter of the pipe gets smaller. This reduces water pressure and flow at fixtures.
3. Water Quality Issues
Rust and mineral buildup can discolor water (brown or yellow tint). Corrosion can introduce iron and other metals into the water. In some cases, lead can leach from the zinc coating if lead was part of the manufacturing process.
4. Leak Risk The older the pipe, the weaker it gets. Galvanized piping is prone to pinhole leaks and bursts, especially at joints.
👉 Best replacements today are copper, PEX, or CPVC, depending on budget and project scope.
