Rule 3701-69-08 Appendix — Ohio Radon Mitigation Standards
3. Vent Stack Discharge Point
The discharge from vent stack pipes of active soil depressurization (ASD) systems must meet all the following criteria to prevent radon re-entrainment, vent blockage (e.g., by snow), and direct exposure risks:
- a. Roof Eave Clearance: Must be located above the highest eave of the roof and as close to the roof ridge line as possible.
- b. Ground Clearance: At least 10 feet above ground level.
- c. Occupied Space Clearance: At least 10 feet above any yard, patio, deck, or occupiable space that is less than 10 feet from the discharge. This clearance may be measured directly or as cumulative distances around obstacles.
- d. Conditioned-Opening Clearance: 10 feet or more from any window, door, or other opening into conditioned spaces that lies less than 2 feet below the exhaust point. The distance can be measured directly or around obstacles.
- e. Adjacent Building Clearance: 10 feet or more from any opening into an adjacent building.
- f. Roof Penetration Height: For vent stack pipes that penetrate the roof, the discharge must extend at least 12 inches above the roof surface.
- g. Sidewall Termination: For vent stack pipes that are attached to or penetrate the side of a building, the discharge must be vertical, at least 12 inches above the edge of the highest roof where attached, and in a position that prevents blockage from snow, water overflow, or other materials.
2. Radon Vent Pipe Installation (Relevant Additional Requirements)
- The vent stack discharge must be vertical and unobstructed.
- Rodent screens are allowed but must have mesh of at least ¼ inch.
- Rain caps are explicitly prohibited.
